WOW!!  What a winter we had, whether you were at home or somewhere in the south, the weather was one for the record books.  Winter is now behind us and it’s time to look forward to springtime activities.   What better way to welcome spring, than to join us for the Springtime in Parke County Indiana Rally.  Consider this your personal invitation.  Please note, the rally begins a day earlier than usual, on Thursday, as we have tours scheduled for Friday afternoon.  Plan to arrive at the Parke County Fairgrounds on Thursday afternoon, April 24, 2014.  The fairgrounds address is 14727 N US 41 Rockville, Indiana 47872.  Watch for the WBCCI signs.

The nightly camping fee is $25.00.  The camp sites have electricity (20/30 amp) and water is available in the area.  There is a restroom/shower house and a dump station.  In addition, we have a room reserved in the county extension building, which has a kitchenette with tables and chairs, which we will use for breakfasts and other activities.  We have the use of this room for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

After breakfast on Friday morning, April 25, 2014, you are on your own for the morning and lunch.  On Friday afternoon, we will caravan to Dana, Indiana, hometown of Ernie Pyle, famed WW II correspondent, where we will tour the Ernie Pyle WW II Museum.  After the museum, we stroll down the block to Brooke’s Candy Company for a presentation, complete with samples, and survey the gift shop.  Brooke Schmidt and her mother, Donna Thompson, are the candy makers and have been designated as artisan candy makers by the Indiana Artisan organization.  They use all natural Belgian chocolate and they are now a gluten-free kitchen.  One of Brooke’s specialties is her very popular Old English Almond Toffee.  For more information, go online to www.brookescandyco.com.  Our next stop is dinner, at the R & R Junction Restaurant in Dana.  The Friday night BBQ specials include ribs, chicken and steaks from the smoker.  After dinner, we return to the fairgrounds for our business meeting, fellowship and games.

Following Saturday’s breakfast, we will caravan and tour some of the 31 covered bridges in Parke County.  Lunch and the afternoon will be on your own to explore and enjoy the many attractions in the area.  Saturday evening we will caravan to Under the Arch Restaurant in Marshall, Indiana.  We will complete the day with an evening of Bingo.  Each person is to bring a wrapped “white elephant” prize and be ready for an evening of fun and fellowship.

After a continental breakfast on Sunday, you are free to attend the church of your choice.  At 11:00 a.m., we will caravan to Mansfield, Indiana, for the Mansfield Mushroom Festival complete with mushroom hunts, a mushroom auction (you will be amazed at the prices these gems garner), an oldies concert, car show and food and craft vendors, in addition to the Mansfield Roller Mill.  In the evening, we will eat at the Moonshine Express Pizza and return to the fairgrounds for games—Joker, Mexican train, etc.  I haven’t played Joker since last fall and am looking forward to honing my skills.  Monday’s breakfast will be at the Burger King in Rockville.

Our community service project for the weekend is the Dana Community Food Pantry.  Dana, Indiana has a population of approximately 608.  In the month of February, the food pantry was open 16 days and served 98 individuals/families.  Their list of needs is great and includes:  canned items, especially protein—canned chicken, Spam; hygiene products such as soaps, shampoos, toothpaste/brushes, toilet paper, paper towels and cleaning products.  Cash is always welcome and checks may be made payable to Dana Community Food Pantry.  If you are not able to attend the rally, I hope that you will consider a monetary donation for the food pantry.  You may send your checks to me, Susan Swearingen, and I will deliver them to the food pantry.  For those of us attending the rally, let us be generous for those less fortunate, showing the caring spirit of Airstreamers!

Remember to bring your accumulation of pop tabs to the rally.  These will be collected and taken to Gillette this summer.

The Parke County area has so much to offer, in addition to the covered bridges, that one weekend will only scratch the surface of things to see and do.  Turkey Run State Park, Raccoon Lake State Recreation Area and Rockville Lake Park are nearby.  There are many antique and craft shops, an Amish community, art gallery and don’t miss G & M Variety Store on the square in Rockville.
